Declare Your Assets Publicly- Civil Society Tasks PMB, Osinbajo
A civil society group Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to publicly declare their assets, whether required by law or not.
This is as it also emphasized that no one be spared in the ongoing probe by the new government irrespective of political or whatever affiliations, adding that the probes, investigations, prosecutions and incarcerations should not be limited to the immediate past government alone.
The group made these known in a statement after its solidarity march to the President on Monday in Abuja, noting that as concerned and patriotic citizens of Nigeria, the march was to say no to corruption and impunity.
Leader of the group Aisha Yesufu however said that Corruption and impunity are killing Nigeria as a nation, lamenting that these have manifested in a culture of stealing of the nation’s commonwealth, lack of accountability, abuse of office, indiscipline and other forms of corruption.
According to her “A total war should be declared on corruption. All our stolen wealth should be recovered, and whoever is found guilty should be jailed. There must be consequences for wrongdoing. This will serve as deterrence for us all.
“The anti-graft agencies should be restructured for better productivity. It is better to have 3-count charges that nail offenders than 55-count charges that fail to nail them, letting them go scot-free”.
She also emphasized that the Peace Committee which was set up on an ad-hoc basis and has fulfilled its terms of existence be officially disbanded, adding that the elections have been won and lost and there has been a transition to a new government which is in place.
Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens further urged the President to do more to unite Nigerians around the country, by traveling from region to region state to state, holding Town Hall meetings to galvanize Nigerians towards its goals, aside from frequent media broadcasts.
“This generation of Nigerian citizens has confidence in our President, and his ability to deliver, and wholly support his administration. Mr. President, please do not fail us. We are concerned because this may be the last opportunity to salvage our country after 55 years of independent nationhood” it said.
