Senate postpones service chiefs screening till Tuesday

The Senate has postponed the screening of the newly appointed service chiefs earlier slated for today (Thursday), to Tuesday next week.

Our correspondent learnt that the change in date was due to the pulling out parade being organised by the military in honour of the former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal, Alex Badeh,   taking place in Abuja on Thursday (today).

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had announced on Wednesday, that the newly appointed service chiefs would be screened during plenary on Thursday by 11:00am.

The senate president who did not explain whether the screening would be done in either closed or open session, urged members to be seated on time in order to effectively do justice to the assignment before them.

But the leadership of the Senate quickly announced the postponement to enable the Service Chiefs as well as the senate president, who had been duly invited to the POP, to attend the event.

A letter of invitation to the POP, addressed to Saraki and signed by Major General M. A. Koleoso, on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, explained that the event where Badeh would be formally disengaged from service, would hold at the Mogadishu cantonment by 9:00am.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Sanni Onogu, told journalists on Wednesday evening that the shift in the date of screening was to enable the new service chiefs and Saraki, to attend the event.

Saraki had read President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter seeking the confirmation of the upper chamber for the appointments of new Service Chiefs, during plenary on Tuesday.

He said the letter to confirm the appointments was in accordance with the provisions of Section18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act, 2004.

Buhari on July 13, announced the appointment of Major General Abayomi Olonishakin, Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice-Marshal Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff; and Air Vice-Marshal Monday Morgan as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

The president also appointed retired Major General Babagana Monguno as National Security Adviser.

Also on Wednesday, the senate president appointed three special committees and one ad hoc committee, adhering strictly to the rule on geopolitical spread.

The committees are Senate Services headed by Senator Ibrahim Gobir (Sokoto East); Rules and Business, which has Senator Babajide Omoworare (Osun Central) as Chairman, and Ethics and privileges, chaired by Samuel Anyanwu (Imo East).

Saraki also named Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West ) as Chairman, Ad hoc Committee on Information and Public Affairs, with Senators Eyinnaya Abaribe and Ben Bruce, among others, as members.

Meanwhile, Saraki has asked senators who are interested in serving in the Senate Standing Committees to pick forms from the Clerk to the Senate and indicate five committees which they wish to serve in as soon as possible.
