A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has appealed to Nigerians to support the Nigeria Police in order to safeguard lives and property in the country.
He said this on Monday at his Hilltop Presidential residence in Abeokuta, shortly after he held a meeting with the new Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali.
Obasanjo, who noted that though Nigerians had different views about the men of the Nigeria Police, he said that such views should not be allowed to becloud their relevance and significance in the society.
He said, “Police play critical role in securing the country, though Nigerians have different views and opinion about the image of the police due to their relationship with police officers in the country.
“The masses should not allow whatever they experienced with the police to becloud their responsibilities in the society.”
Obasanjo linked the rate of crime in Ogun State to its geographical location, adding that most criminals from the neighbouring states, especially from Lagos, have relocated to the state being a state at the central point.
Describing the new commissioner of police in the state as a dutiful officer, he said he earned his recent promotion due to his diligence and commitment to duties.
He advised other officers of the command to emulate the virtues of the commissioner and commit themselves to discharging their constitutional responsibilities.
Ali said he had two objectives to fulfil in Ogun State which were to fight crimes to a standstill and as well ensure protection of lives and property of the people.
And to achieve this, he solicited the support of the former President and other well meaning personalities in the state in stemming the tide of crime.
