Turkey-based Azubuike Okechukwu will lead Nigeria Olympic team to an invitational tournament in South Korea later this month, AfricanFootball.com understands.
The Yeni Malatyaspor midfielder was not initially scheduled to be on the trip, given his club commitments, as they were expected to participate in the playoffs for promotion to the Turkish Super Lig from the PTT 1 Lig.
But with Malatyaspor failing to make the playoffs, the 19-year old will now be available to lead the team to the South Korea tournament, which is geared towards preparing them for the Olympic Games in Brazil in August.
The Turkish PTT 1 Lig ends on May 15 and he will join the ‘Dream Team VI’ shortly after, ahead of the trip to Seoul on May 29.
The last one year has been remarkable for Azubuike, as he emerged captain of the Nigeria U23 team, and then sealed a move abroad from Bayelsa United.
He also made his Super Eagles debut against Egypt in Alexandria.
He should be on the plane to Brazil barring any unforeseen circumstances.
