Iniobong IwokStalkholders in the education sector have commended the senate resolution pegging the validity of the unified tertiary matriculation examination(UTME) result conducted by the joint admission and matriculation board JAMB to three years.
Recall that the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly last week passed a resolution, which slashed the registration fee of (UTME) from the current N5, 700 to 2, 500.
And also adopted the recommendation of the Committee chaired by Senator Binta Masi Garba that the change of institution, course form should be free.
Speaking to daily times in separate interview, they noted that it was unreasonable for jamb to be written every year, adding that it was obvious that the examination body was after money that would. Accrue to it from the sales of it forms.
They stressed that validity of result for three years would help in eliminated bottleneck association with the conduct of the exam.
According to a season Educationist Ephariam Enjoh"The senate decision is commendable why should jamb be every year?what is the usefulness of it?go to the US scholastic aptitude test SAT is every two years, and even the money they charge increase every year. JAMB is only interested in the money it would get to pay it staff,we have seen some many candidate lose their life through the stress of JAMB is the right thing that have been done".Enjoh said
A candidate Alice udoh added that the such decision would check exploration of students by the examination body and it agent.
"This is my third JAMB and every year I have been scoring more than 200 the problem is connection for admissions it make sense for me to continue to do the exam every year even when am passing?Jamb need to be check and very happy with the senate decision,at least if you can't use your result this year it can be use next year"
However a parent mrs Ebunoluwa Akindele lauded the action but call for caution in it implementation.
She said "it is good imagine how the students are suffering every year to write the exam even if you pass you would stii write next year if you can secure admission".
"But I advise we study the proposal very well. I would advise that the candidates that have their result in the year before should be consider for admission first".Akindele added.
However the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, disclosed recently in Abuja during the opening ceremony of JAMB-UNEB Benchmark on Item Banking.
that such a policy would obstruct the education progress of students across board.
Ojerinde also expressed reservations about the Senate position which according to him in any way signify opposition to cutting cost.
He said, “There are complexities in this thing, until we are able to clear it. When you say you will use JAMB results for three years, is it an achievement test or aptitude test? However, are we delaying his or her life? Are we postponing his or her life by telling them to stay at home? If by next year he doesn’t get the cut off points, what happens?
“I have nothing against the idea, because we will tell the children, ‘those bluffing Polytechnics and College of Education, go there and waste their time’, if it is a waste of time.”
