Heavy Fire At Ondo State Governor's Office Disrupts Meeting With PDP National Chairman
It was gathered that the fire was caused by a power surge that resulted from a poorly-installed air conditioning unit in the governor’s office.
Our correspondent reported that the inferno occurred when Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Ali Modu Sheriff was paying a courtesy visit to Governor Olusegun Mimiko at his office in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The national chairman had earlier visited Rivers State to solicit support for the party's candidates contesting in the upcoming rerun elections being held this Saturday before arriving in Akure.
Sources told our correspondent that the fire started when Mr. Sheriff was about to begin his meeting with Mr. Mimiko.
One of the sources who wished to not be named revealed that the fire started around 1 pm and destroyed some government properties, including important files in the governor's office.
The source further reported that Mr. Mimiko abruptly fled the room with Mr. Sheriff.
A witness reported, “I saw the governor and the national PDP chairman moving like doves and speeding off in an official government vehicle to another location outside the governor's office. I later gathered that they ran for cover at the governor's house while the fire kept surging. Workers were begging for help so that the fire wouldn’t extend to their offices,” the source said.
Several civil servants that witnessed the incident told our correspondent that the fire was a "State embarrassment" for the governor at a time when the national leader and other executive members of the the PDP were visiting his office in Akure.
"This is a big embarrassment to the governor and the people of the State,” one of the workers said.
SaharaReporters gathered that the Ondo State Fire Service was able to put the fire out after working for several hours.
Ondo State Commissioner for Information Kayode Akinmade spoke with journalists, claiming that the fire was caused by a power surge in a room of the governor's office.
