Man 25, to Face Murder Charge for Killing Father

A 25 years old man, Mfreke Archibong Effiong arrested by the Police in Akwa Ibom State is to face a murder charge for allegedly killing his aged father, Mr. Archibong Effiong.
The accused, a native of Ikot Akpan Nya in Ibesikpo-Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa-Ibom State was paraded before newsmen at the Akwa-Ibom State Police Command, Uyo last Thursday.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delia Nwawe, told reporters that Mfreke hit his father with log of wood on the head leading to his death.
  Nwawe who stood in for the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Murtala Mani explained that the deceased, a father of six children slumped and died immediately being hit with the stick before he could be rushed to the hospital.
“This young man murdered his father by using a log of wood to hit his head, the young man will be charged to court after investigation,” she stressed.
The suspect confessed to the have committed the crime, lamenting that he did not mean to kill his father even though it was out of provocation.
The accused said, the incident occurred on Monday February 8, 2016 as he came back home from his oil-palm tapping business only to meet his father and mothering quarreling and enquired to know what was the problem.
Mfreke said as his mother was trying to explain what happened, his father attacked him with a broken bottle on him and in self defence he picked a big stick and hit the father on the right arm and he fell down and later died.
"Please, I did not know that he was going to die. I did it in self defence. Please, I don't want to be killed but I should be sent to the prison", said.
In another development, five police officers in the command were issued special police commendation certificates by the State Commissioner of Police in appreciation of their excellent and committed services to the force.
Mr. Mani urged them to see the certificate as a motivator to spur them to do their best for the command in combating crime in the state.
Also, the Police Commissioner unveiled the new police uniform for 40 Federal -Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) deployed to the state.
Mani said the rebranding of the SARS was the initiative of the Inspector General of police, IGP Solomon Arase to reposition the force for effective performance.
He said that SARS operatives in the state had recorded great achievement in the area of kidnapping and armed robbery, pointing out that some of the achievements beat human imagination.
He charged the 40 operatives to be committed to their duty and should not allow criminal to have their way in the state.
He said, “I appreciate all of you, make sure criminals do not have any place to hide in Akwa Ibom State. Double your efforts to achieve zero tolerance to crime.”
Mani stressed that the black and new uniform with the inscription: F-SARS was to make members of the squad not to be noticed in dark places and reiterated the commands resolve to bring criminal activities in the state to a zero level.
