A CONTENDER for the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Edo State, Maj-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (rtd) has called on the party leadership in the state to create a level playing ground for all aspirants ahead of the primaries.
Airhiavbere, who was the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2012 election in the state, dismissed claims in certain quarters that a particular aspirant had been anointed, just as he expressed optimism that the he remained the candidate to beat in the forthcoming primaries.
The retired army chief, who spoke during a visit to his kinsmen at Agbodo Community to intimate them of his aspiration, assured that only the best candidate would emerge from the primaries.
“The APC primaries in Lagos, Kogi and Bayelsa states were all transparent and Edo State can not be different, coupled with the fact that Edo State is the only APC state in the South-South. Nobody will impose a candidate for Edo APC and only the best candidate will be accepted,” Airhiavbere stated.
He expressed hope that the national leadership of the party was poised for transparency and would ultimately ensure that the electoral process was not skewed in favour of a particular aspirant.
Airhivabere, however, counselled the contestants to see the primaries as an exercise to test their popularity before the delegates.
