Rivers: Ex-militants on rampage, unleash mayhem on motorists

There was tension in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, when  rampaging ex-militants, yesterday evening, attacked drivers and other road users along Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway. They reportedly snatched people’s belongings in the process.
The angry ex-militants were said to have been armed with dangerous weapons and set bonfire at the centre of the road between the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Secretariat down to Waterlines Junction.
The incident caused pandemonium, as drivers abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety.
According to eyewitnesses, the boys chanted “pay us our money,” as they attacked road users.
It would be recalled that the former militants had always protested delayed payment of their amnesty monthly stipends.
Also, they had accused their leaders of not paying them the exact amount allocated for them.
Meanwhile, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was quoted as  saying normalcy had been restored in the area.
