Police, soldiers foil Warri jailbreak

combined team of policemen and soldiers in the early hours of yesterday foiled an attempted jailbreak at the Okere Prisons, Warri, Delta State.
The incident came barely one year after a group of notorious criminals awaiting trial, escaped from prison custody.
The Sunday Sun learnt that the incident which happened between 3am and 5am, was facilitated by the epileptic power supply within the premises of prisons.
It was gathered that the prisons had been in darkness for over seven months. A dependable source at the prisons told Sunday Sun that inmates had been sleeping without electricity and there was no diesel to power the only generating plant in the place.
Another source disclosed that the prisoners also rioted for several hours over lack of water after security personnel attached to the prisons foiled the attempted jailbreak.
It was gathered that since January 1, 2016 there has been lack of water supply at the prisons with result that prison warders escort inmates to fetch water from nearby houses.
Although reasons for the attempted jailbreak were still sketchy at the time of filing this report but sources at the facility explained that the power outage gave inmates the push to break out of the prison.
Okere Prisons, Warri, is said to be vulnerable to jailbreak as many top criminals awaiting trial have always absconded.
The Delta State Police Command, through its spokesperson, DSP Celestina Kalu, confirmed the incident when contacted. According to her, security at the prisons has been beefed up to forestall further occurrence.
