The resignation, last week, of former spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Eseme Eyibo, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is drawing huge attention. It is, understandably, the main issue in key political circles both in Akwa Ibom, the politician’s state of origin and Nigeria generally. The man dumped PDP for All Progressives Congress (APC). The move will be formalised today.
In a statement announcing his decision to quit the PDP, he explained: “January 08, 2016 shall trigger a political pursuit of multi-dimensional consequences, I must admit.”
“Having had the privilege of the membership of Peoples Democratic Party, which platform I became its state Financial Secretary,Executive Chairman, Akwa Ibom Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission (EARCOM) and later member of the House of Representatives bespeaks the foundational vision of the progenitors of PDP as a leadership recruitment nursery.
“Today, that party has conducted itself in breach of the visionary philosophy of its founding fathers, instead of intended leadership nursery guided by the principle of social justice and a platform to promote content analysis of its manifesto and implementation strategies of its programmes to government, as an enabler for good governance, it has rather thrown up economic choristers and social misdemeanours, who have converted our common wealth into private franchise thus turning the party and the state to ‘behemoth of monstrous proportion’.
“Its present system has produced unprecedented corp of political ‘dealers’ instead of inspirational leaders occasioning the increasing deficits in revenue yielding assets and sundry incentives to trigger community growth and prosperity.”
The lawmaker continued “It is worthy to note that, as the reign of this development eclipse, poor ethical integrity and deteriorating institutions subsists, it is imperative for people with development orientation and appropriate mindset to come together and inject a “new deal” to stimulate the collective urges and aspirations of our people with functional confidence.
“I have therefore taken the hard choice of resignation from Peoples Democratic Party and in preference for the platform of All Progressive Party where I hope to further my contributions to the development of the state and Nigeria.
“My decision is predicated upon the sufficiently persuaded presence of mind, ideas, capacity and character of its State leadership and leading edge structure that abound in APC to drive sustainable change that will enhance the emergence of contemporary and knowledge based social capital and new economic order.
“Having served as the chairman of the Akwa Ibom State ethical and attitudinal reorientation commission (EARCOM); State Financial Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party and Chairman,Committees on Media/Public Affairs, Donor Agencies & Spokesperson,House of Representatives,iam expected to bring to fore my leverage on strategic media entrepreneurship, network with international development organisations and expertise in public communication to deepen the growing profile of APC in the state.”

Eyibo is aware that his new political step is raising dust in some quaters. And he is enjoying it. Sure, the reason his political move is eliciting widespread interest centres on the political image the politician has cut for himself. Apart from the fact that he stood out when he held sway as the chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, that was in the Sixth Assembly, he has made huge impact on the lives of many through his lectures on leadership recruitments.
Eyibo represented Eket/Onna/Esit Eket/Ibeno Constituency in the House of Reps of the state. While in the House, he formed the Initiatives, an influential discussion platform that projected members .
Largely on account of how he applied himself in his office and perhaps his contributions on the floor of the House he became undoubtedly one of the most prominent members of the Sixth House.
However, his visibility earned him some enemies, especially in his home state, Akwa Ibom. At a point, he was rumored to be nursing the ambition to upstage former governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio when the latter was still in office. Interesting, it was the time the lawmaker was spearheading a campaign that the governorship of the state should be zoned to Eket Senatorial Zone where
the clamour had huge supporters. He paid dearly for the initiative in 2011, as he was denied ticket to return to the House.
