FUTA workers protest, demand sacking of VC

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, Federal University of Technology, Akure chapter, has called on the Federal Government to sack its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, for allegedly dismissing the teachers of the institution’s staff school.
The workers, who protested on Monday, accused the VC of employing new teachers without following due process.
The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions such ‘No to disengagement’ ‘Don’t kill FUTA Staff School’ and ‘Our children’s future is important’, among others.
The FUTA-NASU Chairman, Mr. Adebayo Aladerotohun, said the VC had an ulterior motive in disengaging the teachers.
He added, “We are saying no to privatisation of staff schools at this point in time because it is not only federal universities that maintain staff schools. The Navy, Army, police and others have their own schools that they maintain.
“We also condemn the callousness on the part of the FUTA management to sack the teachers. It appears that Prof. Daramola has an ulterior motive in the matter beyond what the Federal Government asked him to do.
However, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, said the directive sacking the workers came from the Federal Ministry of Education.
Noting that the directive was not peculiar to FUTA, he added that the action affected teachers of other federal staff schools in the country.
