1,110 suspects arrested in Lagos in two weeks

IT was harvest of criminal suspects as the police arrested over 1110 hoodlums within Lagos metropolis.
The arrest was made between December 11, 2015 and January 5, 2016.
The suspects were arrested for different offences such as armed robbery, murder, cultism, child theft, impersonation and rape.
Giving a breakdown of the arrests, the State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said 47 suspects were arrested for armed robbery, while 14 notorious members of various cult groups were arrested for murder.
Owoseni, said out of the 1110 suspects arrested 82 were freed after screening, 1028 were charged to court while 746 were convicted. He explained that 155 were discharged and 128 are still on awaiting trial list.
The Lagos Police boss at a press briefing held in his office, at Ikeja, said during an encounter with the police, two armed robbers were shot dead within the period under review. According to him, 16 guns of different calibre 40 live ammunition and 24 vehicles were recovered, while 1055 motorcycles were impounded in the same period.
He said one Ganiyu Amusat, 25, of No.2 Hanson street, Alakuko, was arrested for allegedly raping a male infant of five years through the anus.
He said the victim was responding to treatment at Jeffis Specialist Hospital, Alakuko.
He stated further that on December 27, 2015, policemen at Ibeshe Division responded to distress call that some robbers were operating at Ibeshe Beach, arrested three armed robbers.
He explained that the robbers had spoilt the day for fun seekers who had gone to the beach to celebrate Christmas.
The CP said on January 2, 2016, Policemen attached to Deton Division responded to a distress call at Estate Bus Stop, Ebute Metta, had a gun dwell with four suspected armed robbers, who had already dispossessed a lady, Faustina Amua of her belonging, adding that during the exchange of gun fire, one of the armed robbery suspects who was later identified as Isiaka was shot dead.
He said one Okechukwu Ibekwe was arrested at Agnoroku, Iba town, Lagos metropolis for allegedly selling his five month old baby boy to one Chinelo of Ihiala in Anambra State.
He explained that the suspect had confessed to have sold the baby for N500,000.
According to him, a 65-year-old man, Bassey Imoh, was arrested for impersonating as a Major General Morgan of the Nigerian Army attached to the Presidency.
Owoseni said the suspect had allegedly duped several people in Lagos of several millions of naira.
According to the CP, apart from the ugly incident in Ketu area of Lagos where a Mobile Policeman shot dead three individual and killed himself, there was drastic reduction of robbery during the Yuletide, promising that the command will maintain the tempo and keep Lagos free of crimes.
