The Labour Party on Sunday in Abuja reacted to the harsh economic situation in the country with a declaration that the current N18,000 minimum wage was no longer realistic.
The party therefore warned state governors who had been agitating for a reduction in the minimum wage to “have a rethink and stop playing politics with the destiny of Nigerian workers because they won’t succeed.”
The LP’s position was contained in a communiqué signed by its National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, and the National Publicity Secretary, Ms. Ebere Ifendu. The communiqué was issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting in Lokoja.
The party reviewed the state of the nation as to the expectation of the citizenry prior to the last general elections and concluded that the slogan and the change mantra of the APC had yet to have an expression in the lives of the citizens.
The LP said, “Poverty, hunger, insecurity and crime are on the increase. We are calling on the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently address the situation.”
The LP NEC argued that Nigerian workers bear the brunt of the harsh economic realities and demanded an upward review of the current minimum wage “as their total take home pay can no longer take them home.”
The party called on the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria to close ranks and release a new minimum wage for workers.
The LP also considered the voluntary resignation of its National Secretary, Mr. Kayode Ajulo, to concentrate on his legal practice and service to humanity and wished him well.
