Fuel scarcity: We’ll resist policies detrimental to Nigerians – NUPENG vows

Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has vowed that it would resist anti-people policies from the Federal Government. In a 10-point communique issued at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NUPENG warned against the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.
President of NUPENG, Igwe Achese, who read the communique yesterday, before the NEC members and newsmen, decried the perennial fuel scarcity experienced across the country. Achese attributed the cause of fuel scarcity to the manner Federal Government managed the subsidy, stressing that NUPENG had watched how the policies were implemented.
He said: “The union condemned in its entirety the perennial and persistent fuel scarcity in the country and the hardship imposed on the masses, especially at this festive period. In the circumstance, the NEC in session calls on the Federal Government and NNPC to flood the market with petroleum products to arrest the current prevalent fuel scarcity in the country.  The current way and manner the subsidy issue is being managed is responsible for the fuel scarcity experienced across the country,”  he stated.
NUPENG President stated that the union could support subsidy removal, only when government had effected complete turnaround maintenance of the four refineries in the country to cushion the effects on hardship.
Also, the union expressed concern over the deplorable road networks across the country, which had become death traps and called for speedy rehabilitation of the roads.
Speaking on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), the NUPENG President reiterated the union’s opposition to any bill that would not check corruption, address lack of transparency, accountability and good governance.
NUPENG also called on Federal Government to overhaul the judiciary and anti-graft agencies, if it was prepared to fight corruption.
Other topical issues the union frowned at were the spate of insecurity, joblessness, casualization (outsourcing) and the use of operatives of Department of State Security (DSS) in fuel-related matters in the country.
