FIBA Africa: Dolphins through to quarter-finals
Nigerian champions Dolphins won their third game in a row on Monday and
booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FIBA Africa Champions Cup
for Women 2015 holding in Luanda, Angola.
In one of the best comebacks of the championship so far, Dolphins on
Monday came back from 28-17 at half time to beat Radi of DR Congo 68-57
in their third game.
The Congolese were dominant in the first quarter scoring 14 points to
Dolphins’ five.
They also won the second quarter 14-12.
Dolphins’ attempt to redeem the game in third quarter fell short as the
Nigerian side won the quarter by only three points, 21-18. They equalised
barely three minutes into the fourth quarter and went on to win that
quarter 30-11.
Radi’s Mireille Nyota led scoring in the game with 19 points, followed by
her teammate, Nicole Mubalo, who scored 18 points. Dolphins’ Chinwe Okah,
who started from the bench, scored 15 points while Patience Okpe scored 11.
On Dolphins side, Tinuke Arowosafe and Tokunbo Olasebikan scored nine
points apiece while Minata Fofana, Juliet Currency and team captain Bintu
Bhadmus scored eight points each.
Dolphins dominated hosts Maculusso in their first game of the
championship, thrashing them 85-58 on Saturday.
In their second game on Sunday, Dolphins defeated Cameroonian side INJS
56-46.
The side coached by Ochuko Okworogun, dominated the first two quarters of
the game leading by 10 points at half time but their Cameroonian
opponents attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, which they won 16-
8, but that was not enough to change the result of the game.
The other Nigerian side in the championship, First Bank, beat KCCA of
Uganda 87-71 on Monday to claim their second win in three games.
The Elephant Girls beat INSS of DR Congo 80-74 in their first game and
lost 70-66 to defending champions Interclube of Angola.
Dolphins are in Group A alongside Maculusso, INJS, Radi, Primeiro de
Agosto of Angola and Berco Stars of Burkina Faso.
Group B has Interclube, KCCA, First Bank, INSS, Ferroviaro of Mozambique
and USIU of Kenya.
The first phase of the tournament is played on a round-robin format, with
every team taking on five opponents in their respective group.
The top four teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages.
