North getting poorer, says ex-gov Aliyu
The immediate-past governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, said on Thursday that the North is getting poorer and unsafe and urged the northern governors and leaders to come together irrespective of their party to arrest the ugly trend.
Aliyu spoke to journalists shortly after the management meeting of the leadership of the Sardauna Memorial Foundation in Kaduna.
He said, “If anybody is to see the situation we are in within the North, you would know that we are poorer than the other part of the country. Something extra must be done by all of us regardless of political party differences, because there is no partisanship in terms of development of our community.”
The former governor noted that there was no partisanship in term of development, stressing that there was the need for all northerners to mobilise themselves to ensure that the region was back to its enviable glorious days.
He added that the youth of the region needed to be mobilised positively by northern leaders for genuine change.
He said, “There is no partisanship in terms of development of our community and that we must mobilise everybody to make sure that our security is back and the people are secured and that economic development is ensured.
“And that the youth are really mobilised for positive activities — that is what we have not done well so far. And that we would come back to look at some of the instructions we have given for the consolidation and the implementation of the decision we have taken.
“The management of Sardauna Foundation has come to discuss what the board has been doing for the past few years to consolidate on it and as well look at the future of what it can do for the unity, progress and development of the northern states in particular and Nigeria in general.
