Mimiko seeks empowerment for women

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has said that women empowerment is the best way to bring rapid development and progress to any society.

Mimiko stated this on Wednesday in Akure while declaring open a workshop titled, ‘Capacity Building for Women in Politics, organised by a goup, Women Arise for Change Initiative.

According to the governor, education is the most important factor to consider in women empowerment. He said that was why his government made free education and qualitative health services its priority.

The governor said, “If we want to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of rapid development and progress, we must empower our women to be able to participate actively in nation building.

“You cannot talk of women empowerment if the society does not deliberately invest in their education and safe motherhood. Our country must ensure that women do not lose their lives in the process of giving birth.”

Mimiko said that nature had endowed women with some responsibilities which put them at a disadvantage when it comes to competing in the men-dominated world of politics, stressing that a serious government must deliberately initiate policies that would address this.

“Women participation in politics will only be encouraged if our country deliberately creates an enabling environment for them to compete,” the governor added.
