Boko Haram overtakes ISIS as world’s deadliest terror group – new report

A new study from the Institute for Economics and Peace has claimed that the Boko Haram insurgency group is currently the world’s deadliest terrorist group. The Global Terrorism Index 2015 puts Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in second place.

The report  indicated that Boko Haram was responsible for 6,644 deaths in 2014, while ISIS killed 6,073 people within the same period.

The report says, “Also notable over the past year is the major intensification of  the terrorist threat in Nigeria. The country witnessed the largest increase in terrorist deaths ever recorded by any  country, increasing by over 300 per cent to 7,512 fatalities.

“Boko Haram, which operates mainly in Nigeria, has become the most deadly terrorist group in the world. Boko Haram pledged its allegiance to ISIL (also known as the Islamic State) as the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) in March 2015.”

In 2013, Nigeria ranked fifth in terms of the highest levels of deaths, but moved to second in 2014. Boko Haram operates in Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

The IEP is a non-profit think tank based in Sydney, Australia and it says it works to promote peace globally.
