BRIEF SUMMARY OF SPORTSPRO NIGERIA - THE ANNUAL SPORTS INDUSTRY PROGRAMME

Sport is the largest sector of the creative industry and is a key strategy asset capable of driving economic growth, job creation and export expansion in developing countries while offering a potential catalyst for improving the productivity of the work force and a healthier physically active population. Nigeria is a country of over 170 Million citizens with a burgeoning middle class and a young population, 65% of who are between the ages of 15 and 30 years. Sport offers a prospect for the Nigerian society as a whole because nothing galvanizes Nigerians more than sports. It is the only national endeavor which every Nigerian supports without thought to tribal, ethnic, regional or political sentiments.

Sports in Nigeria is still largely government dominated, and corporate involvement in sports is seen largely from the standpoints of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), despite the phenomenal growth in global sports financing and the centrality of sports business and marketing that forces corporate organizations in developed countries to engage in sport for economic reasons. The potentials of the sports sector to drive future economic growth and youth development has been hampered by the inability to aggregate the quantum of funds required to drive sports as a business in Nigeria to the extent it has been reduced to a footnote, with emphasis been placed only on participation at major events.

A major challenge in the process of developing sports as a key sector of the economy is the shortage of capacity in the sector as well as a lack of understanding of the economic potentials in the industry and even how the industry functions as a key driver of the economy. SPORTSPRO NIGERIA seeks to address the major challenge of shortage of capacity in the process of developing sports as a key sector of the economy. It also seeks to address the lack of understanding of the economic potentials in the industry and even how the industry functions as a key driver of the economy.

SPORTSPRO NIGERIA is facilitated by The School Of Media and Communications, Pan Atlantic University, Lagos and leading sports management company Premium Sports Management Services Limited. With a clear understanding of the need for effective communication in the process of developing economic sectors of the country, coupled with the desire to contribute to the enhancement of the knowledge base of the sports industry, both organizations teamed up
to provide an avenue to build capacity in the sports sector and communicate the potentials of this industry to key focus groups.

The First edition of SPORTSPRO NIGERIA will take place in 2015 with the theme “The Sports Industry in Nigeria, Communicating the potentials, Leveraging the opportunities” and will engage with the private sector and communicate the potentials of the sports sector in Nigeria as a driver of the economy, and how to leverage the opportunities therein. The programme encompasses a series of four (4) workshops between August and November 2015, with A-list Resource persons drawn from within and outside Nigeria, to share their insights, thoughts and experiences in the business of sports with a view to highlighting the potentials inherent in the sector and leveraging same. (Please note that the Inaugural Workshop took place on Tuesday 11th August, 2015. Please see the attached report for a detailed summary of the activities)

SPORTSPRO NIGERIA hopes to tap into the knowledge and experience of global sports industry personalities who, to put it figuratively, have been there and done that, and get them to share their insights and knowledge of how the industry works to the practitioners of our fledgling sports industry. The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has associated with this initiative as a full partner, in recognition of the potentials of this programme to enhance Nigerian Sports. Other institutional partners expressing interest in the programme include The National Sports Commission, Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Nigeria Stock Exchange, National Broadcasting Commission, The League Management Company (LMC), Nigeria Football Federation, Nigeria Nationwide League, News Agency of Nigeria, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL), National Universities Games Associations (NUGA), International Association of Sports Press (AIPS) Africa, Brila FM Sports Radio Group
